Reference: Windows XP InsideOut, Deluxe(2nd) Edition
Dear Sirs:
While trying to upgrade my current Windows 98 SE based configuration to Windows XP home edition without losing the remaining filed/programmes I encounter some deviati-
ons and resulting problems from the process detailed on page 24 of the reference title:
After having chosen "Install Windows XP" from the Wel-
come screen the next option screen does not offer any option(Upgrade)as the scroll down menu shows one only possibility: "New Installation" - "choose this option to replace Windows or to install Windows on a separate disk or partition". Later on a screen appears "you chose to install Windows on a partition that contains another operating system. Installing Windows XP on this partition might cause the other operating system to function improperly". Still later, after having opted to maintain the current FAT 32 file system, another warning appears:"If you continue, the existing Windows installation will be overwritten. All files, subfolders, user accounts, applications, security and desktop settings will be deleted."My Documents" folder may also be deleted". As I have an image of my working configuration for back up on a second hard drive I continued the setup process with this System Proper-
ties the result: MS Windows XP Home Edition, version 2002,Service Pack 1.
I have now restored my previous configuration and would appreciate any advice and steps that you may be able to provide in order to upgrade to Windows XP without losing all the other files and programmes.
Thank you Helmut JH
